“Guess what?” Max said to June with an uncontrollable
smile on his face.
“What?” she asked.
“Angela broke up with Clayton!”
“Oh, good for her! How is she handling it?”
“Pretty well, it seems like. She seems much happier
now. She’s really proud of herself for dumping him.”
“I’m proud of her too,” June said, “even though I don’t
know her.”
“Yeah, I’m really proud of her too.”
“So do you think anything will happen between you two
now?”
“No. If anything was going to happen it would have
happened by now.”
“True enough. And you’re still with Love anyway,
aren’t you?”
“Yeah, but we have an open relationship anyway.”
“An open relationship?”
“Yeah. We can see other people, but we’re still
together. Well, we aren’t together because I’m here and
she’s not. But you know what I mean.”
“And you’re both okay with that?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Okay,” June said.
“What?” Max said.
“Nothing.”
“You think it’s a bad idea.”
“I personally wouldn’t want that. But if it works for
you, that’s great.”
“Why wouldn’t it work?”
“Well, there’s jealousy, for one thing.”
“I can handle jealousy.”
“Well, good for you then. I couldn’t.”
“I think you could. You wanted your best friend’s
boyfriend, and you dealt with the jealousy okay.”
“I did not deal with the jealousy okay.”
“Okay, then, don’t have an open relationship with
anyone.”
“I’m sure that I won’t.”
“Alright then.”
“Aren’t you a bit worried, though?” June asked.
“About what?”
“That she’ll meet someone else and want to have a
relationship with him and then break up with you.”
“No, not really.”
“You seem pretty confident about the whole thing.”
“Why shouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know. I just thought that you had some
abandonment issues.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well, there was that one time when your cat was gone a
few hours so you freaked out.”
“I wasn’t worried because I thought he’d abandoned me!”
“Sure you weren’t.”
“I was worried because he didn’t know the area very
well.”
“Okay.”
“He could have been lost, cold and alone!”
“But he wasn’t.”
“He could have been hit by a car.”
“But he wasn’t.”
“But I didn’t know that at the time,” Max said.
“What are you gonna do when Love doesn’t e-mail you for
a couple days because she’s busy not being on the internet?
Are you gonna get a search party to Central America to make
sure she’s still alive?”
“Lookit. My long-distance-open-relationship is gonna
work for me, and that’s that. Can we please talk about
something else?”
“Sure,” June said.
