Author's Notes: Um, laaaaame.
Watching Katara heal yet another of Aang's earthbending-inflicted wounds with kind words and cool water, Zuko comes to a startling realization:
Katara very much resembles his mother.
They don't look much alike, to be sure. The physical similarities extend about as far as their dark hair, but that's it. His mother, he remembers, was beautiful and fragile, like glass. Katara is beautiful too, but in a more robust and durable way, like a well-crafted sword.
Their personalities, he supposes, are rather contrasting as well. Katara is strong-willed, self-confident and dangerously stubborn. She isn't afraid to use force to get what she wants, she screams when she is angry, and she is a more-than-capable bender. His mother, on the other hand, was gentle, peace-loving, and soft-spoken. She was a non-bender, and he can't remember her ever losing her temper, nor raising a hand to her children.
In fact, he thinks, they might only have one thing in common: the will to protect others.
Ursa was very protective of her children; after all, she killed her own father-in-law, the Fire Lord, to save her son's life. When Zuko got hurt, it was his mother he would run to for help, not a servant or nanny. She would kiss him goodnight, tuck him into bed, and sing him to sleep with lullabies.
Katara, too, is very protective of her family. This 'family' is a mismatched group of runaways, rogues, and wanted criminals, but he doubts that something so trivial as titles would deter her from her self-appointed job. She cooks every meal for them, heals them when they get injured, and generally takes care of them. Zuko has a sneaking suspicion that when she does become a mother, she will be much like his own mother was, with lullabies and goodnight kisses and soothing words.
Blushing only slightly, he wonders just how far off that day will be.
END.
