Their relationship was like the seasons.
It started out in summer. They were on his turf. Everything was unbearably hot and humid, a tension and hatred humming through the air everytime they came into contact. The oasis was the climax of this season, each fighting the heat and sweating out their problems and troubles through a nice, long, life-or-death fight (which now seems kind of pointless, seeing as he would join up with them eventually, anyway). Summer was their vent, when there was this gaping trench between them. It was when all positive feelings except triumph were held back.
Fall. It was a short transition period, when he had gone to exiled Prince on a mission to regain his honor, to a mere boy with his Uncle running from the Fire Nation. It brought them down onto a certain level, although there was still nothing but hatred and almost every oppurtunity to argue or fight had been seized vigirously.
It moved on to winter quickly. Snow filled the trench, and he was able to cross, although it was quick, sudden, and dangerous. He had moved onto her territory, the snow, ice, water. She was in her element when she was with her friends, and he had come in defenseless and in need of help (being chased by Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, then Iroh's death was far too much at one time for him, for anyone, to handle). The winter of their relationship had been empty, with only the occasional word or conversation, neither able to warm up to the concept of friendliness.
Then spring had dawned. It had been a beautiful spring, overbearing the solemnity of winter. It started with only a few small plants peeking trough the glazed over icy snow drifts, the occasional kind word and a steady building of trust. Soon there was no evidence of there ever being a winter, flowers blooming like never before. It was an eternal spring, a bright proclomation of friendship and maybe even... more?
