Big boy bed

Ephram just napped for the first time on his new toddler bed. We tried to put him to sleep on it last night and he woke up screaming unconsoleably after about an hour. It took us another hour just to calm him down. I think he must've had some sort of nightmare or something ( Read more... )

The week b/f his 2nd birthday. It was totally his choice. Though I slept on a mat next to his bed until he fell asleep every night for a year! (I put a tv in his room so I could at least catch some tv time for myself.) As soon as he turned 3 he just started putting himself to bed and sleeping all the way through. Never had a problem since.
Corinne on the other hand never liked the crib and now that she has a big girl bed hates that too. She usually falls asleep on the couch and we transfer her upstairs (she falls asleep the same time every night w/in 15 mins so its not a huge deal). Sometimes she sleeps all the way through sometimes not. I often sleep on the bed in her room around 3am b/c I am a really light sleeper and vinh wakes me up 100 times a night. Sometimes I wake up and she is curled up next to me. ANYWAY.... not perfect sleeping arrangements around here but there is no crying or fighting. The pedi told us to pick our battles some things aren't worth fighting over. He highly encouraged us not to pick a battle over the potty, eating or sleeping b/c its the only thing a 2 year can control. So far great advice!
Vinh's family and most asian cultures are into co-sleeping. In fact most families share a bedroom (not a bed!) until they grow up so vinh is very pro-cosleeping. Our kid's bedrooms each have two beds in case someone doesn't want to be alone. SIL/BIL shared a bedroom with all 3 of their kids and kicked them out one by one when they turned 4 without a fight.

wow, yeah, luckily Ephie has never been much of a climber like that. I don't think he is ready for the toddler bed yet, though. We put him in it the other night and he got up every 20 minutes. When we said it was bedtime, he trotted back in his room and got back on the bed and went back to sleep as long as someone was there. We're going to try again in a couple of months. Hopefully he'll be ready by then.

I like the idea of cosleeping, but I could never really sleep much with him in our bed. I like my space. Your Pedi sounds great, that is good advice. I don't think anything will change with ephie's sleeping habits any time soon. No matter how I try, he seems to just do what he wants.
