I got the very sad news this morning that my dear friend Bill Wertz died of a massive coronary yesterday morning (June 5th, 2009). He was 54. I remember him fondly, and will always remember the summer I spent with he and his long-time partner of 28 years, Sean Farrell, in Spruce Creek, PA. He was kind enough to take me on a tour of Gettysburg, and later we all went to New York City together. He was a brilliant man, with a wicked sense of humor. He could, at times, be stubborn, and he was absolutely intransigent in his devotion to civil liberties. He was also a humanist. No one knew more about films. I adored his manner, his deep understanding of many subjects, and his kindness. He will be deeply missed.
