When he glanced outside his window and saw hills of white erratically scattered across the landscape, it struck Daisuke that it was snowing.
At first, he was delighted, for it meant that there was no school.
But then, he realized that there were no longer such things as “snow days” and that he was old enough for work instead.
So Daisuke took a shower that turned from steaming-hot to cold in the first five minutes (“Holy shit!”), dried off his shivering body with a thick, forgiving towel, and performed the rest of his early morning ablutions with four minutes to spare for a cup of coffee and an un-buttered piece of burnt toast, as well as a brief perusal of the Thursday paper.
According to the header, it was the fifteenth anniversary of Dark’s disappearance. Since Daisuke’s sacred maiden had returned his affections and accepted both Dark and Daisuke for whom they were, Dark had left. Faded, actually.
Daisuke missed him.
After college graduation, Daisuke had asked Riku if she would be his wife and bear the next Phantom Thief Dark.
She had said “Yes” without hesitation, which was quite characteristic of her, now that Daisuke thought about it. She had probably been waiting for him to ask since… well, since he had asked her to be his girlfriend so many years ago.
The young boy-turned-man gazed at the front page without seeing it, his memory turning back pages in his mind instead.
Feathers white as snow scattered about him as he pulled the auburn-haired girl to him for a chaste brushing of the lips. She did not pull back, only murmuring, “Daisuke…”
Outside, the first snowflakes of winter were drifting downward lazily, a testament to their new and eternal love.
A soft voice, drenched in sleep, pervaded his thoughts and brought him back to the present.
“Daisuke, it’s snowing. Why are you going to work?”
“Erm…”
“You’ll catch your death of cold out there if you so much as step outside. I’ll call the office and tell them you’re sick. It’d be true enough anyway if you actually went today.”
Riku’s calm logic was a force to be reckoned with, and Daisuke was thankful for it today. He settled for a murmured “Thanks” in her ear and a kiss on the forehead as she yawned with half-lidded eyes.
And so Daisuke watched his significant other pad off, muttering about the nuisance that was snow, into the bedroom they shared.
“Love you, Riku,” he called out shyly.
She poked her head back into the kitchen and blew a kiss to him, sporting the same blush as the redhead. “I love you too, Daisuke.”
It was just another morning in the Niwa household.
