It seemed that Satoshi Hiwatari was looking for love in all the wrong places.
As a child, he had reached out to clasp his mother’s hand, tearfully wanting comfort for the bruised knee he sported from a fall earlier that day.
But she instinctively recoiled from his touch, as if in disgust. On her face was a look of sheer horror.
Later on, Satoshi had visited his parents’ graves, wishing that he too -- like so many other, normal children -- had someone to care about him.
But corpses never kiss their children goodnight.
Hiwatari-san, his foster father, was not even considered as a remote possibility. Even Satoshi knew that putting on a pretense of compassion and generosity was no substitute for real love and affection.
Now, Satoshi was looking at an oblivious Daisuke Niwa and pondering what exactly he had done in a previous life to deserve this.
