Anyone know anything about deferring student loans?

I've racked up a pretty sizeable student loan debt (but who hasn't these days, really? I sure as hell couldn't pay for college while I was there...) and I need to see about deferring them for a year while I go to China. The ones I got from a private bank I know what to do with, but who do I contact about the federal student loans? I've been googling, but I can't figure anything out.
And YIKES are my loans large. I mean, not as bad as they'd be had I gone to private school... but... remind me to live in Finland or something in my next life so I don't have to pay for college again.
