yr frustration is in part due to the separation of the external and internal goods of academia. this distinction can applied to many areas of life, but is mainly exemplified in texts by way of the academic system ( ... )

no, not at all.
on the other hand, it isn't that i'm not interested in external goods. i certainly want rank, money, power blah blah as much as anyone else. it's just that for me, that desire is entirely separate from the desire to learn. or something like that -- i'm really not entirely sure.
