I see a few other people trying to start over again on LJ, so...here goes! Thanks to
harrigan and
cassiopeia7 for the idea.
Which TV shows did you let go of in 2017?
Along with
harrigan, I'd have to say Orphan Black. I'm so sad it's over, but I'm also happy they ended it well. No deaths for the sake of killing off a character, just a satisfying resolution that brought things full circle and set the characters off into the sunset.
Not a TV show, but I let go of Tumblr. I'd enjoyed the random mix of stuff that popped up, but in the months after the election, the whiplash between deeply intense political posts and fluffy fandom stuff was too much for me when I couldn't control what was going to come next. I realize now that I don't actually miss it.
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2017?
Glitch, which is an Australian show on Netflix that I definitely recommend. It's about a small town where one day some people just...come up out of their graves. They're not zombies, they're just alive again. The main cop in town tries to figure out what's going on, and so do the Risen, because they don't even remember how they died. They're from all different time periods, so that's kind of interesting, too. The second season just came out, and they're only six-episode seasons.
Star Trek: Discovery. (Haven't seen the 2018 half of the season yet.) I like it! I'm not so much of a Trekkie that I'm hung up on the inconsistencies in the timeline, and the characters are interesting and they haven't done too many of the stock plots yet, so I've got high hopes.
Your favourite TV show(s) of the year?
Orphan Black, Stranger Things (though S2 was not nearly as good as S1), Sense8
Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2017? Why?
The Good Place, Cleverman, Travelers. Just haven't gotten around to it, I guess.
Which TV show impressed you least in 2017?
Quantico got TERRRRRRRIBLE at the end of its second season. I mean, it was a mess throughout the season, but it was laughable by the end.
Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2018?
The Good Place, Cleverman, Travelers. And Wayward Daughters! (Or sisters or whatever it is.)
Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2018 unless things significantly improve?
I was really unhappy with the first episode of the new X-Files season, not just because of the big revelation but because the whole thing kind of sucked. Hoping it gets better, because this is the show of my heart.
Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?
Supernatural. It just means too much, and there's still so much pretty!
Your favourite new film you watched this year?
Wonder Woman or Blade Runner 2049, both of which blew me away on the big screen. BR2049 had some problems, to be sure, but it was absolutely stunning visually.
Your favourite book read this year?
I actually read a few fiction books for the first time in years. (A sign of how much fanfic has dwindled?) But I didn't like any of them that much. :( From fanfic, I'm used to knowing where a story is going and that there's going to be a satisfying resolution. I did enjoy Flight Path: A Search for Roots Under the World's Busiest Airport, which is a memoir about growing up in suburban Atlanta and how many homes and neighborhoods have been lost to the airport's expansion over the years. Puts a human face on a topic I've spent a lot of time researching.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Imagine Dragons' Evolve. I love them so much, and I first heard of them through fandom, so I'm grateful for that.
Your favorite online fandom community of the year?
I pretty much only hang out in SPN, so, you guys!
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
This is kind of weird to say, but
quickreaver. I met her on the fabulous New Year's roadtrip from last year, and we met up again in the fall when I traveled to run a half marathon. What a joy to meet one of the best-known fandom creators and find someone so down-to-earth and relatable and nice.
Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?
I've been catching up on Once Upon a Time while I quilt. I stopped watching when they introduced the Frozen characters because I hadn't seen the movie yet. Even after I did, I never got back to it, but now I finally am. And I've been reading Emma/Killian fic because I love them soooooooo much.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Gonna echo
harrigan again and say SPN, but it's not...dead...yet!
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
PACIFIC RIM 2 OMG OMG OMG OMG I AM SO EXCITED I CANNOT WAIT.
