Movie #2: Sherlock Holmes

Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

Director: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams

I'm convinced knowing next to nothing about a movie before watching it, is the key to enjoying them. Sherlock Holmes is what I call a popcorn movie. It's nothing deep and extremely fun and even if it felt a tad long it was the perfect way to spend a Sunday evening.

I have never been much of a Robert Downey Jr. fan but I was impressed with him here. He was fun and believable as Sherlock taken into mind what little I knew about the character to begin with. Jude Law was amazing as Watson, he gained back the love he had lost with Closer (he made that character so believable pathetic I hadn't been able to stop loathing him after watching it), and became a character I could relate to. Trying to move on with his life but still stuck in the antics of his best friend and partner.

But the thing that surprised me the most is Rachel McAdams' role as Irene Adler. Not really knowing the story of Sherlock I didn't know about the existence of her or how kickass she was. She wasn't the damsel in distress I was expecting her to be.
