A/N: Don't hate me please, I know I am a slow updater. I try to be a little fast but then I get distracted for a few days at a time, then I am never home. I will try to post more faster [I can now that I have less work to deal with]. Anyways, about the story, it might seem a little slow and at some points you're going to be like, "meh what's good with this," BUT it comes together soon. So I hope you guys stick with it and I hope you like it!
Rachel Berry laid in bed that night thinking of how sweet and soft Quinn's lips felt against hers. They were so real and sincere; she could barely fathom why she had ever made out with Finn and Puck. It had become clear that both of those boys had underlying motivations.
The only problem was Quinn was an enemy. How could she be trusted?
-----------
Quinn, in the nearby town, didn’t fall asleep that easily. She pulled out her cell phone and began texting a freshman that she had caught earlier that week, while simultaneously texting the senior that Jesse had introduced her to.
It was her only distraction. Her only distraction from Rachel Berry. Although, the blonde already knew that the young girl was insufferable, she couldn’t stop thinking about her. The way she looked awestruck at her and when she profusely apologized and when she dared to speak back to Quinn.
Rachel was different. She knew that if Jesse was just as good as she was, Rachel would inevitably fall for him anyways.
She was close to begin a sexting session with the senior [because the stupid freshman suddenly fell asleep] until she received a text from Rachel.
Are you awake? -Rachel
Quinn smirked. Or maybe Jesse couldn’t get a response this fast.
Yeah, I am. -Quinn
Oh...why are you up so late?
Thinking a lot and texting.
Thinking about what?
Life, the universe, and everything.
Haha, Douglas Adams fan?
Indeed, I do other things than sing actually.
Really? What made you join Vocal Adrenaline then?
I have my reasons. Why did you join New Directions?
It is my ticket out of here. My ticket to stardom of course.
I see. That sounds like the most common motive of everyone in Lima, Ohio I see.
No one wants to be a loser. Trust me, I know.
Why do you say that?
Quinn almost fell asleep waiting for Rachel's text. She felt her phone buzz beneath her head.
Can we see each other again? =\
Aren’t you afraid of being seen with a member of Vocal Adrenaline?
Quinn knew she was being snide but she had to be honest. Not to mention, it helped her case in stealing Rachel from Jesse.
A little but I don’t think it was okay for me to just force you to take me home.
The blonde smirked. This is going to be a breeze.
I am just trying to be respectful. And I think, if you are okay with it, Friday would be a perfect time for us to see each other again :-)
You do realize that that is tomorrow, right?
Yes, I do.
You don’t waste time do you?
Not a chance with a pretty girl like you.
Then, tomorrow it is. =]
I will pick you up after your practice then?
Then how will I prepare myself for this?
You don’t need to. I prefer to see Rachel Berry as herself.
I am always myself.
Again, lying doesn’t make you confident.
*pouts* Fine....5pm is fine. We can talk with each other tomorrow. Good night, Quinn.
Good night, Rachel Berry.
Quinn stopped texting that senior all together. For once in a long time, she slept with a smile plastered onto her face. Even though, Rachel Berry was intended to be part of the plan, Quinn knew she had to tread softly. She wasn’t going to get hurt this time around. She wasn’t going to get hurt ever again.
---------------
Rachel Berry felt happy inside as she walked through the halls of McKinley. She knew she was more dignified than that and just walked at a quicker pace with a smile. However, she was conscious and knew that the decision she had made came with a lot of questions. Questions she couldn’t find herself answering. So, she settled for some help.
"So, you have found someone new?" Ms. Pillsbury asked as she brushed the speck of dust from her desk.
"Yes, but I don’t know what to think. Does this person really like me or are there ulterior motives?" Rachel responded. Even though Quinn had been very respectable and kind, there was something off. For once, Rachel felt her instincts kick in before her hormones. "I mean, this person is so great, very kind, funny, understanding."
"What would make you think that he had ulterior motives then?" the redhead asked with concern.
"Because...promise you wont tell the Glee Club or Mr. Schuester." The last thing she wanted everyone to know was that she was quite possibly involved with the enemy. Emma nodded her promise. "This person is from Vocal Adrenaline." The doe eyed woman widened her eyes in surprise. "I know, I know! Its horrifying to know that this person, who is so great, is from Vocal Adrenaline wants to get to know me."
"It's all right, Rachel. Look, for now, let’s keep this under wraps. No one needs to know about anything of this Vocal Adrenaline character. If you really do like him, find out more about him. Ask around; make sure that he isn’t going to backstab you or hurt the club."
----------
Rachel stepped out of the room, still concerned and elated. She was happy about the blonde, she was, but Emma was right. She needed to make sure.
Lost in her thoughts, she turned a corner and instantly bumped into someone else.
"Oh god! I am sorry!" she apologized as she heard the books fall onto the ground. She bent down to help him pick up the books. "Sorry about that, I didn’t see you." She looked up and gasped.
"Hi," he responded. "It is not a problem."
"Y-y-y-you’re Jesse St James," Rachel stuttered, marveling Tina's. Her mouth opened like a drowning fish as she stared at him.
"And you’re Rachel Berry," he smirked. It was hard to believe that the lead Vocal Adrenaline was standing there right before her. Well another one. Rachel was beginning to think she was getting lucky.
"What are you doing here?" she eyed him cautiously.
"I am looking for a Mr. Schuester," he answered as he held up some papers to her. "Rumors have been going around that the spunky redhead on your team dropped out. So I am here to take her place."
Rachel looked at the taller boy in confusion. Nevertheless, she began walking him to Mr. Schuester's office. "I am surprised that you are even here. I mean, you don’t have motivation for really being here."
"Of course, I do," he responded as he gave her a warm smile. "Look, I saw your performance at Sectionals. It was flawed; you lacked Barbara's emotional depth. Nonetheless, you are talented." Rachel beamed. It was a contrast compared to Quinn's 'You are flawed' bullcrap about her lacking confidence. "I would like to see more of you and if you let me, you'll be able to learn a lot from me."
He kept eye contact with her and Rachel felt like there was nothing wrong. His eyes were clear and discernible. Rachel knew better than to judge him on his eyes, but she felt there was nothing wrong. And she kept note that he was there to help as he said.
"Well, this is his office," Rachel announced as she stopped in front of the door plated 'Will Schuester.' "It was very nice meeting you, Jesse." She held out her hand to him.
"It was my pleasure," Jesse took her hand into both of his. "I hope that we get to see each other a lot more." She blushed as he bent his head down to kiss her hand.
He gave her a light salute and walked into the office. Rachel let out a sated sigh. Jesse St James was a lot more handsome off the stage and more enchanting than she ever imagined. She bit the bottom of her lip as she walked away; thinking of how such a great singer complimented her. Her! Of all people.
"Who was that?" Finn appeared next to her.
Rachel didn’t make an effort to hide her joy. She tried to spite him because she knew about his date with Santana and Brittany. "That was Jesse St. James of the Vocal Adrenaline. He told me that I was talented and that he would soon become a mentor."
"Wait, Vocal Adrenaline? Are you kidding me? Rachel, he could be spying on us," Finn instantly assumed. His facial expression more stunned than ever. Rachel merely shrugged. "You don’t think that he is a spy?"
"Well, would a spy go straight to our coach? He went to talk to Mr. Schuester because he found out that we are short one person."
Rachel tried her best to defend him. She didn’t feel like anything was wrong with Jesse. He was kind and gentlemanly.
"Rachel, he is in Vocal Adrenaline, you should have found me," Finn added on. Rachel rolled her eyes. There he goes trying to defend her when she didn’t need it. He looked at her with a grave expression. "He should be out of this school."
"What would it matter? Let's see what he is really doing here first," Rachel insisted. She frowned at how he was progressively handling the situation. She could tell by the frustration in his voice, his patience was running thin. "I mean it; Jesse actually seems like a really nice guy."
The tall ogre sputtered out at Rachel's suggestion. Even though, she had seemed to lose a couple of marbles to him, Finn was growing more furious. He was clearly frustrated at multiple things and seeing Rachel with Jesse, didn’t make things better. He growled to the air and walked away from Rachel.
-------------
Rachel was practicing her scales in the chorus room while Kurt and Mercedes gossiped, Brittany and Santana were Brittany and Santana, Puck was wishing that he wasn’t there, Tina and Artie were discussing Iron Man, and Mike was teaching Matt how to pop and lock. Finn walked in and automatically sat next to Puck to talk about the first thing that came up. Things had been a little tense because both of them decided to sleep with the same redhead.
"Alright, guys, we have a new addition to our glee club," Mr. Schuester announced as he entered the room. Everyone turned their attention to him and Jesse, who was following behind.
"Are you serious?" Finn cried out loud.
Rachel moved to sit down.
"This is Jesse St. James as you know--"
"That boy is from Vocal Adrenaline!" Mercedes shrieked.
"Is that your son?" Brittany asked.
"We can’t have him on our team, Mr. Schue," Artie responded. "He could be a mole for all we know. I don’t think it would be fair for us."
"Not to mention, this ruins all of our chances of getting a solo," Mercedes went on. "We all know you’re going to do whatever it takes to win. We can't have him here."
"Look guys, I am not here to take anything away from you," Jesse calmly said. "If you let me, I'll be your teacher. You can learn a lot from me because I am such a big star."
Mr. Schuester sighed. For him, there was no reason for anyone to distrust Jesse. He believed that with such a great voice, Jesse would be an asset to the team. "Look guys, we all still have equal opportunity."
"Rachel Berry seems to be most favorable," Mercedes snarked.
"In my defense, I am the best singer here," Rachel instantly returned.
"Guys. Jesse is right, we could learn a lot from him. He is talented and a star. If he means what he says, then we will take his word for it and try to get something out of it."
The whole team looked at one another. Everyone shrugged as they stared at Jesse. He looked on at them with hopeful eyes and they didn’t feel like he was a threat. It was becoming strange, even for Rachel, that no one found too much of a threat in Jesse.
Finn crossed his arms and sank in his seat. Everyone was being stupid.
Rachel frowned slightly. She made her way to Jesse when everyone went back to their respective conversations earlier. "Does Quinn know that you’re doing this?" she whispered, hoping no one would catch wind.
A flash of anger crossed Jesse's face but he smiled nevertheless. "You know, Quinn?" he had to play dumb to get her.
"Uhm, yeah, well she is the lead female of Vocal Adrenaline. So, she is pretty important when she kind of highlights you," Rachel reasoned. She gave herself a mental pat on the back for giving a smooth answer. "Do you think that she is going to just lead on her own?"
Jesse pushed his hair aside. "Look, Rachel, what Quinn chooses to do now is none of my concern. I think we shouldn’t talk about Vocal Adrenaline and you should show me around this wonderful facility." He gave her a smile that she could not resist. He stuck out his arm for her to grasp like a chivalrous knight. "Please, lead the way."
------------
Rachel kept her eyes on the clock intently even as she walked Jesse through the school the whole day. Their arms were hooked to one another. Jesse was making great conversation about show tunes with that Rachel almost found herself at his throat for disagreeing with her. Nevertheless, being connected to someone so well gave Rachel a sense of belonging. Finally, someone who understood Broadway just as much as she did.
The final bell rang and Rachel quickly moved towards her locker. Jesse was so surprised that she had let go of him that he followed her.
"Would you like to come get some coffee with me?" Jesse asked, trying to maintain his finesse but seizing an opportunity.
Rachel grabbed her phone out of her locker. She opened it to a new text message.
Do you mind walking a block away? Just in case someone sees you. -Q
She smiled. Just the sight of Quinn's text made her smile. She closed her locker and almost forgot Jesse was standing there. "I am so sorry. I don’t think I will be able to today. I have to meet--a friend." Until she got to know Quinn more, everything had to be a secret. She didn’t give Jesse another second and rushed out of the school.
She kept an eye out behind her, trying to see if anyone was following her. Rachel knew that she may not be the most popular girl in school but anyone could notice something strange going on. She looked up and down the street for Quinn's car. At a distance, she saw the blonde girl standing outside her car, leaning against her door.
Quinn looked down at her watch and around. There weren’t too many kids left, making it all right for her to be so close. When she felt Rachel staring at her from across the street, she looked up and waved.
Rachel smiled and quickly walked to Quinn's car. "I hope I didn’t make you wait too long," she apologized.
The blonde smiled as she took her bags. "It is no big deal. I thought I was late actually." They rounded the car and Quinn placed her backpack in the back seat before opening the door for Rachel. "Come on, I think I know a perfect place where we can relax." She shut the door and began walking back to her side.
Just as she opened the door, she caught the sight of him at the corner of her eye. She turned and saw Jesse looking at her disdainfully with a shake of his head. Yet, Quinn said nothing nor did she react. She got into the car and left Jesse standing there on his own.
