Today, something amazing happened.
I was working with Michelle and Dr. B was the doc of the day who came to see consults with us. I got grilled by Dr. B all morning about the most random cardio stuff, but held my own. I learned on rotations thus far that you don't have to be right 100% of the time, you just have to be thoughtful about your answer and put forth good effort. We were chatting in the ICU after seeing a patient in paroxysmal afib about my background, his background, what I've done on other rotations so far, where I'm headed, etc.
We rounded on one more person to write orders and he closes up their chart and goes (and I will never forget this conversation), "Let's cut to the chase - those questions I was asking you downstairs about what you plan on doing. You've done great here. You have knocked the socks off everyone, people I trust - everyone has had good things to say about you--" and then proceeded to offer me a job with the practice, should I be interested in sitting down and talking with him about it further. It was SUCH a great conversation. I had gotten random comments throughout the rotation about doing VERY well (which I attribute to my awesome learning experiences in Internal Medicine), but didn't think too much of it. Dr. B knows I won't have any idea likely what Ryan and I planning on doing (and sort of what I do depends on what he does as well) until graduation, but brought that fact up before I even expressed it! There is no pressure, I just need to keep in contact with him closer to graduation.
I don't know if it's what I want to do, but I am pretty good at it and it's a good place to start. Cardiology is hard but it's hospital medicine and I love hospital medicine. It's so nice to think I have something waiting for me if I want it at the end of this road of PA school. I am on cloud 9 just thinking that I did well enough for someone to want to pay me for being there. :) :) :)
The weird thing? 5 years ago on this very day is when I decided to become a physician assistant! Who knew... my first "career" job offer. Today I can rest easy feeling just a little bit easier, more confident about my future.
