weekend

It feels so good to be home! I got off around 5:30 on Friday and booked it back to my apartment, grabbed my stuff, then headed for the road. It's a long drive but so worth it. 3 and a half hours. I was home by 9 and Ryan had Chinese food waiting for us :) It's a wonder that both of us were even able to keep our eyes open past 9:30 but I think just the idea of finally getting to hang out kept us awake.

Unfortunately he had to work yesterday too, but luckily only had to work a few hours - usually he has to be at the hospital by 4:30 a.m. but yesterday it was 6:00. When the alarm went off yesterday I was SO confused as to where I was and it took me a good couple seconds to figure out what was going on, and to realize I did not have to wake up. I slept soundly until 10:30 when Ryan came home and felt like I had been sleeping FOREVER. How crazy is it that I got 6 hours of extra sleep Friday night, which is an ENTIRE extra night's sleep for the week?

We had a late breakfast and just relaxed here all afternoon. It felt so good just to lounge around. He napped on the couch while I messed around with my keyboard. We got dressed and went to dinner in the evening with the intention of going to see a movie, but quickly nixed that idea after we realized the next show we could make would be 9:50 p.m. Sure, a few months ago we'd be able to handle it, but not while on this rotation. Our circadian rhythms are screaming to be asleep by 9:45.

As for this next week, it's going to be a weird one cuz I keep forgetting it's really and truly Thanksgiving this Thursday. I am ASSUMING I have the day off for real, because guess what! The general surgeon invited Mina and I over his house for Thanksgiving if we didn't have any place to go. Traditionally he invites the students and residents over, as well as other people at the hospital who don't have family in the area. I think that is SO NICE! Totally not what I expected from a surgeon. Prior to this rotation I had heard nothing but trash about surgeon's tempers and throwing things at nurses and losing their cool. Not Dr. Li. I think that's great.

As for Thanksgiving, I'm hoping Ryan for sure has it off. If he does, we are thinking of meeting halfway somewhere. Cracker Barrel is supposedly open on Thanksgiving Day so that's probably where we'll end up. Maybe we'll get a hotel room to hang out in because otherwise I don't think there are going to be very many places to spend hours and hours in. It would be awkward to go eat and then have nowhere to go. What a strange Thanksgiving, huh? I have a feeling it's not going to feel at all like the real deal.

Anyways. I have a lot to be thankful for this year, that's for sure. This rotation has already been a very very humbling one.
