Books

According to my latest measurements, I have 45 linear shelf space of books. And that doesn't account for the fact that many of the books are double-packed on my shelves. The amazing thing is that I've probably given away about half of that amount in the last year. And I could still weed away more. The books I absolutely cannot bear to part with ( Read more... )

I also have a ridiculous amount of books. I have also moved like three times in the past couple of years. Talk about the worst thing in the world to have to move--giant boxes full of heavy books.

When we were apartment hunting, I always wanted to look at floorplans with built in bookshelves. The boyfriend will probably think that his DVD collection will go in these bookshelves when we move in together, but he's REALLY mistaken. We will also probably have about 20-25 copies of Harry Potter books, what with owning special editions and British versions. He's got them all in paperback and hardback. I guess some will just have to go live in my classroom.

Anyway, getting to the point...
You made me think that when I get rid of more books, I will probably list the titles on livejournal for all my f-list to read and just donate them that way if people want them. I'm always dissapointed when I sell them to half-price books and I get crappy money for them. I'd rather have people I know read and enjoy them. I thought of this, because I was sitting here going, "Man, I bet Zsenya donated some really awesome books."

And don't bother with Passage to India on that list and Invisible Man. Read them both in college in a few of my lit classes and hated them. You're not missing much.

There's a place in Baltimore called The Book Thing where you can donate books and they have a "store" except that everything is free. The provision is that you can't resell them. It's great, because I can take them as many books as I want, and I have found good stuff inside as well. I just dropped off three bags of books there for bbennett as well (although I did take two of her books for myself). This time around I gave away a lot of Russian-language textbooks and books on Peter the Great. Because really, how many books on Peter the Great does one need (I took a course in college on him...)? I still have two whole shelves of Russian-language books that I will probably never read again, because I've forgotten all my Russian, but I still have this faint idea that one day, I will pick it up again.
