Pride and Yukiness

Nov 27, 2005 10:14

I TRIED. I tried to be open-minded. After all, Jane Austen is Jane Austen, right? I tried not to compare the most recent film version of Pride and Prejudice with the 1995 BBC version. But after 24-hours of reflection, I have decided that even if this one had come first, I still wouldn't have liked it.

Why I Think it Suxed, or, What Was with the Statues? )

My wife is a huge JA fan, but we haven't seen the movie yet, and every time I read her selections from another fan review she sags a little more. After the bit about the pig balls, she hesitated and finally said, "Maybe we should just watch this one on DVD."

It's not even out yet here in Sweden, so I don't have to decide yet whether to see it or not - but every time I hear anything about it I can't help but think about how ardently I admire and love the BBC series. Pig balls?! WTF?

It's like in fan fiction when someone writes "velvety, chocolate-colored cinammon eyes."

It's orbs. Plus, they swirl, too.

Seriously. There is nothing so distracting as farm animal testicles in the background. The sheer SIZE . . .

And this comes from a woman who just spent three weeks picking the damn things up and describing them in exquisite detail. You never quite get used to them.

With each review, I become more and more grateful that it isn't coming to our theater. I really wanted to give it a chance, and I still want to see it, but.... ugh.
