Watched some of the Oscars last night, and my reaction to "Crash" winning was pretty much the same as Jack Nicholson's: are you frelling kidding me? His expression was priceless. haven't seen the movie, but just adored BBM so much that in my heart it would have to win. Ah well, at least most of the best movies ever created did not win the Oscar and instead movies that we'll never remember have beaten them.
As for the win for Philip Seymour Hoffman ... I just don't like him and for reasons which defy logical reasoning. Somewhere in the early part of his career, I must have seen him in a movie as a character that annoyed me. (For some reason I'm seeing him as a guy at a prep school or boarding school and also as some kind of maggoty reporter who ends up getting set on fire, but can't recall which movies they are.) But for whatever reason, I can't find him a likeable actor. It's like Jason Alexander and Bill Paxton.
Jason Alexander's character, Stuckey, in Pretty Woman left such a linegring dislike for me that I detest anything he's been in ever since. I know he will forever be remembered as George Costanza, but to me, he is Stuckey and therefore thoroughly unlikable.
As for Bill Paxton, he has the dubious distinction of being Chet in the 80s classic, Weird Science. As a result, anything I see him in instantly becomes a weird Ernest thing only with Chet as the main character: Chet Goes to Space (aka Apollo 13), Chet Chases Tornadoes (aka Twister), and Chet Goes Sailing (aka Titanic).
And for as long as I can remember, Philip Seymour Hoffman has followed the path of Stuckey and Chet. I don't know if his portrayal of Capote was good or not, and I'll never know. Even if I did see, in my mind, he would just be a sleazy guy playing at being an author.
