Have you ever woken up pissed in a hotel room with an hour or so to pull yourself together before work, struggled to pull your pants out of your bag only to finally yank out two pairs, watched as one pair arced through the air straight out of the open window and disappear out of sight? Have you ever poked your head out of the open window to find your pants sitting atop a running Ford Mondeo that pulls away into the Hampshire countryside seconds later? Have you ever laughed all day to yourself at the sight of good underwear disappearing into the morning rain conveyed by an unknown and unknowing individual? I have.
For the last couple of days I’ve been running Disability Awareness training in Andover, Hampshire. This has involved getting groups of people to trundle around the town centre in different types of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs and getting a view of life from that eye level. The idea is to show people the many problems that can be faced daily that the able bodied don’t even notice. Small steps into shops, being ignored by sales staff, drop curbs in impossible places, locked disabled toilets etc.
Me, yesterday
Some of the reactions from the general public were amazing (and upset me a little bit). An old woman loudly saying ‘Ahhh isn’t it a shame’ to her friends as we pass, one of the guys I was training being ignored by a good friend when the friend saw him on a mobility scooter, a woman tutting in Woolies because she had to take one step sideways, being ignored by sales staff, that kind of thing. But I just had to think about the Mondeo and everything was alright again.
The local press even took an interest in my training. I’m being interviewed next week by The Andover Advertiser. That’s another few seconds off my 15 minutes to add to the mention of a drunken reveller at a China Drum gig in the NME and my 10lb 7oz Barbel that got me fish of the week in the Anglers Mail, oh yeah and me on Board Stupid picking my nose at the Tamworth Snowdome with Normski, Travis Cut, Stiltskin and KrisKros.
And Kong Rats to the
