I haven't had anything to say here since September, largely because I think about everyone on my friends list here is on my FB friends list, and nearly all of them are more active on Facebook (and so have I). The other part is just not having that much to say at any given moment. There's not a whole lot to say about a lot of the intervening time, honestly. I started reading a lot of entry-level economics and playing Star Wars: Old Republic.
The two months since my 35th birthday have, honestly, probably been more eventful and productive than the six months plus before that. The book club i joined was, essentially, a twice-a-month thing. We'd meet once a month and talk about the book for the month, and we'd meet once a month at a local brew pub. The people were pleasant, and it was good to have some regular social interaction, but it wasn't exactly meeting my tier-3 Maslow needs. All that changed when season two of Game of Thrones started. A lounge here in South Austin agreed to let us use their big TV since outside football season Sunday is a totally dead night. Suddenly, we're all getting together every week, hanging out for an hour before and after, and the whole feel is different. I feel like a half dozen of these people have gone from acquaintances to actual friends, doing non club stuff regularly and making plans for more. I'm not the only one who's noticed the difference. It's gone from something we did to something exciting. It's also convinced me that I am, in fact, an extrovert with poor social skills rather than an introvert seeking contact because I'm not happy alone.
Free Comic Book Day 2012 was my final trip to Austin Books (or any other comics store) for the foreseeable future. I'm not cutting the medium out of my life, I'm not making some kind of anti-Diamond statement and my transition to digital isn't me going green (honestly, I think I'm doing okay on *that* regard...well, as okay as one can do in a city with an average daytime high of 101 or higher for 5 months of the year.) I found that I'm not reading nearly as many comics as I used to, but I was still buying just as many. I'd go to ABC every two to three weeks, drop $50, and immediately read Avengers Academy, Invincible, Atomic Robo and Daredevil over dinner or on the bus home. Then I'd leave the rest for later, and later wouldn't happen. One day I realized I must have 50 plus comics I'd never gotten around to reading, and had fallen so far behind on Amazing Spider-Man that I didn't have a clue where I'd left off. So my new rules are: 1) digital only 2) don't buy it til I'm ready to read it RIGHT THIS MINUTE 3) 'corporate' books other than Avengers Academy (which doesn't pricedrop anyway, because Disney are greedy) and Transformers: More than Meets the Eye wait for the 28-day price cut 4) creator-owned stuff gets bought from the Comixology/Dark Horse/etc web store rather than giving Apple 30% of the money.
Pretty much it for now. I probably won't start posting here daily again, but I'm going to try to avoid another seven-month absence.
