January 30th
Oh today. I caught the late bus today but it went smoothly and I was still a half an hour early. I poked around the office before class and discovered that I had received a letter from Colleen! This excited me to no end (I also got a postcard from Emily a few days ago!). I just love getting mail so please, if you have a minute, send one my way!
Colleen mentioned that I have begun to write like someone who is acquiring English as a second language, not like someone who can actually speaks it. Good observation! It’s so true. It is as though your two languages try to settle at equilibrium. You try to be better at one and become worse at the other. There are psychological studies suggesting that most people have a limit to the number of words that they can acquire no matter what the language. So either you devote all of your words to one language, or disperse them among however many languages you know. I do feel like I’m sacrificing a lot of my English in order to learn this language!
It rained more today. I’m waiting (rather impatiently) for the SUN! It is makes this dirty and somewhat ugly city more beautiful! Though I have to say that I have the prettiest umbrella in all of Spain… that matches my coat PERFECTLY!
My coat (made of polyester) is beginning to pill up. I wear it everywhere everyday so obviously it’s going to fall apart fairly quickly but for 60$ I’ll take it because it’s the perfect weight, it packs well, it’s washable, and it’s cute! What more can I really ask for?
Javier is making me espinacas (spinach) tonight. YES!!!!!!!! I’m so happy. Hopefully I’ll get some digestive tract movimiento if you know what I mean…. *sigh*
No new news in Rayo land. He is still a slipper stealer and peer-in-my-room, like always. I find myself cooing at Rayo in Spanish and not in English which I think is funny….
I accidentally started speaking English to Javi mid-sentence tonight to which he raised his eyebrows in confusion. My spanglish is horrible! English words just sneak in! And it’s the same when I speak English. Spanish words sneak in!
I might be going out after cena tonight for a Tuesday night chips and gauc party at a local bar. That’d be pretty fun, I do believe. I can’t pass up a chance for guacamole although after my last shot at “Mexican food” I’ll suspicious about the contents of this guacamole.
Mayte keeps coming in my room and it drives me nuts. I have a little sign on my door that says “puedes entrar” and “no puedes entrar” that I usually don’t use, but I’m tempted to put up “no puedes entrar” because she keeps fiddling with my shade and today she opened my windows in some crazy way which requires you to TAKE OUT and reinstall the window in order to close it again. Obviously I lack the knowledge to take out the window and put it back in again…. So, I was cold and my things were wet. I don’t know what she was thinking when she did this but I think it probably had something to do with it smelling a little like my zapatos (shoes) in this room. I’ll even confess it smelled a little. I’m pungent…what can I say.
I’m overly productive here on account of the ridiculous amount of free time I have. I have 3 hours of class and then I wander. Yesterday I had to go to TAM (the transportation office) to fix my bus pass which had become busted on account of being around the magnetic clasp on my purse. Today I wandered to the Tabacco shop to buy some stamps. Of course I visited Hugo’s bar (the Carpe Diem), and had my strawberry juice. Sometimes I just like to walk to walk. It’s fun to look at things and it’s even more exhilarating to put on my Ipod and listen to really loud music while I’m walking around. I find that it helps me keep up my walking pace as well because if I walk too slowly I get bored and want to just be home already. I really do walk faster than nearly everyone in this city which, if you know my former walking history, is really quite amazing! My short little legs are magical here! Well…that…and everyone is just perizoso (lazy) here.
My leg hair is now officially long enough that my socks are pulling it out. I just can’t resign myself to shaving in the shower here. I’m tempted to join the local gym so I can stand in the hot water for a minute without having to turn it on and off and on and off between rinses!
