Title: Better
Rating: K
Genre: Angst, Friendship, Character Study (again...)
Pairings or Characters: Kyouya, Haruhi, Tamaki, Hikaru, Kaoru, Honey, Mori, Haruhi/Tamaki, once sided Kyouya/Haruhi
Warnings: None
Summary: Kyouya muses on the changes in the Host Club after the events of the Series Finale.

A/N: Agian, this is unbeta'd, again due to my lack of a BETA reader who watches this show. All mistakes are entirely my own, and I would appreciate if there is anything glaring if someone could point it out :).

Oh, and I am aware that, in the end of the Finale, Haruhi dances as a girl so she possibly stops being a Host, and that Honey and Mori graduate. So this is sorta-kinda AU - a bit.

“It’s time to play the ‘which one is Hikaru game!!!” Kyouya Ootori could hear the twin’s unison cry from across the room. He rolled his eyes, and looked back to his clipboard, trying to decide on a costume for Haruhi for their next theme day.

He looked up at the Host Club’s latest member, and smiled: she was stood behind the twins, pantomiming to the ladies the answer to the twin’s game. Kyouya had the strong suspicion that the twins knew that she was behind them, and didn’t mind at all. Tamaki sat in a chair near to them, watching and laughing at the antics of his girlfriend, who winked at him every now and then.

On the other side of the hall, Honey and Mori sat chatting with some of the ladies from their class. Honey’s bunny, Usa-Chan, was nowhere to be seen. Mori was talking to the guests in actual sentences, by the looks of things.

Kyouya stood on the sidelines, with his clipboard, as he always had and simply watched as the closest people he had to friends went about gradually finding themselves. He wasn’t sure how to feel about this shift in his world.

Because Kyouya was starting to feel strangely left behind. It wasn’t that he wasn’t already as well formed and grown up as he needed to be. It was just that when they first started up, and he’d first become properly acquainted with the other members, it had seemed that they were all in relatively the same boat. Each with some form of familial or social problem, every man for himself and his own agenda. Like him. He could understand that, he could relate to that.

But now things were different. Now the others seemed to be… happy. And full, uncalculated happiness was something Kyouya wasn’t built for.

And Kyouya had always known the cause of this shift in their exclusive little world.

Their ‘secret princess’: Haruhi Fujioka.

Haruhi, who was so ambitious and so driven. Who lived in a different world and yet fit into his world perfectly. Who had an answer for everything and a dangerously sharp wit.

Who saw people for who they really were, and didn’t shy away from them.

She was a perfect match for Tamaki. They were both bright, and friendly, and sweet. They both automatically put family and friends before themselves, and affected people around them in ways they could never understand. They were beautiful together, now that they’d found each other.

And Kyouya owed Tamaki so much, he really shouldn’t be jealous.

He was prepared for the rise in demand from the ladies. He had accounted for it and planned around it and made a few calls to secure another costume for each event. He just wasn’t prepared to like her, to actually want her around. To want to put his personal feelings toward her get in the way of the pursuit of a profit.

Because of her influence, they had all changed.

For the better.
