tv is gud

I don't know why I really like making lists lately. I've been obsessing over music, but I'm going to go into shows now. Not many, only the three I currently have on my mind.

The Shield

Might as well get this out of the way first. The Shield is my favorite television show of all time. It's also the most underrated show ever. It won a crap load of awards for it's first season, and then everyone just kind of forgot about it. I've never understood this. The first season is pretty bad compared to the rest of the series. That doesn't mean it's not up to scratch, because it's orgasmic. It's just that all the following seasons keep finding ways to top what the show's previously done. It's just always baffled me, why it's never got the appreciation it deserves. Why are award shows so fucking retarded?

I've said this before, but there's only one word I know that can accurately describe it - Shakespearean. I'll steal from Wikipedia like I always do.

"Many have linked [Shakespeare's tragedies] to Aristotle's precept about tragedy: that the protagonist must be an admirable but flawed character, with the audience able to understand and sympathize with the character. Certainly, all of Shakespeare's tragic protagonists are capable of both good and evil. As one of the most influential Shakespearean critics of the 19th century, A.C. Bradley argues," the playwright always insists on the operation of the doctrine of free will; the (anti)hero is always able to back out, to redeem himself."

Pretty much four out of five characters in The Shield is an antihero. Their hearts are always in the right place, but the situations they get in always test their moral bearings, and you are never fucking able to guess what they're going to do. I always enjoy coming up with theories surrounding my favorite shows, and I can even be a little good at it sometimes. But the reason why I like The Shield so much is that it always stumped me. Always. I would have my theories, but then I would always be SO FUCKING OFF, and those fuckers would sideswipe the fuck out of me. Fuck fuck. I never had any clue about what was going to happen. It kept on surprising me and leaving me awestruck for all seven seasons. I cannot stress this enough - The Shield is the greatest television show in history. Nothing can top it. Ever. It's impossible. Of course, forget everything I just said if you decide to start it. Nothing ruins something that's awesome more than godlike expectations. Just go into it with a blank slate and watch it for what it is, not what you expect.

Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy was created by Kurt Sutter, a lead writer for The Shield. It's about biker gangs being badasses. He got a few anonymous advisors who are either currently in a biker gang, or were previously in one, to help him out and make sure he's doing everything accurately. The protagonist is Jax, the young Vice President of a gang called The Sons of Anarchy. He struggles to find an identity for himself, and wrestles with finding a balance between his morality and the questionable direction the gang is going in. The first season was completely fantastic. The Shield's formula is all there, and I might be so bold to say that the first season was probably on par with The Shield's first. The Shield being over is devastiing to me, but the blow is softened with this starting. I think it has the potential to be just as good.

Kurt Sutter must have taken some tips from The Shield, because he wants this to be like Shakespeare too. He's said in interviews that a lot of it is based around Hamlet, and if you're familiar with Hamlet, you can definitely start to tell about halfway through the first season.

Battlestar Galactica

On its surface, Battlestar Galactica is just another sci fi pew-pewing boom boom adventure time. But goes much, much deeper than that. Where The Shield and Sons of Anarchy turn to Shakespeare for their storytelling techniques, Battlestar Galactica turns to religion and philosophy. But if I go too much into the deeper elements of the show, I'll probably spoil some things, so you're just going to have to watch it yourself. It's probably my second favorite show after The Shield.

Humanity is spread around twelve planets across the stars, called the Twelve Colonies. Forty (maybe fifty?) years before the show begins, there was a huge human-cylon war. The Cylons are robots created by man. After the humans are victorious in the war, the Cylons disappear, go into exile, and are never heard from again. Our story begins when the Cylons suddenly appear again, and nuke the fuck out of everything. All twelve colonies are destroyed, and humanity nearly becomes extinct. The remaining human survivors hop on their ships, and look for a new home - a planet called Earth, which is nothing but a myth they only know of from ancient scrolls.

The show is ending. It's only in its fourth season, there are only five episodes left, and the final climax is going to be nothing short of epic. It's not getting cancelled. The story is simply ending. But there's good news. A prequel is being made called Caprica. It takes place during the first human-cylon war forty years before, and it is going to be fucking amazing.

Both of these trailers are awesome and I couldn't decide which one to put here, so here's both
