Inspiration from a song

The lost songs flew around the edges of the world, riding the sorrows of mankind. It would have been the saddest thing anyone had seem, had there been anyone left to see it, but ten days ago mankind died.

Why did the city of New York vanish into the fire as we ran from it? I could have sworn that the only thing we were saved by was your love of the parks outside the city. I know that you had always said the last thing you'd leave behind was your love of nature. Now you'll never have to.

The coast fell under the barrage of troops that stormed along sonic bridges from the depths of the sea, wasting away as the sun dried their gills. Not fast enough to stop them from destroying Miami or Atlanta. We had to run from the lakes and streams, rivers and seas to remain safe.

The only hope that we could see was on the edge of the galaxy where the stars had rekindled against the encroaching darkness from the edge of the universe. If we kept going fast enough, maybe just maybe we’d find what we needed. When the engine gave out and we drifted helplessly along the tides of hyperspace I almost gave into despair. I looked in your eyes and we made love with the light of the stars singing against our skin. I think I know what brought the stars back to us.

I was listening to the radio that night, not knowing what the future would bring. The celestial song played over 99.3 FM as I watched her dance. It was the most beautiful thing I had seen in my life. If this was really the last night of the world it was a good way to end things. I turned the music up and walked over to her.

In the streets the children died and the poets sang, not a word was spoken for everyone’s soul was broken. We had been cured of our addiction to life and were hoping to go on to a clean existence from now on. All we needed was enough acid for everyone.

He stood on the porch of his house as the sky fell down and drank his whisky. He had lived here for 25 years with his wife, and he wasn’t going to leave her memories alone today.

A thousand years later they came to Earth again and looked on a world changed beyond belief. Plants and animals had overrun the world, and the cities had become true urban jungles. It was only at the Grand Memorial that anything remained of the world that had once been. Standing there, they could feel the whispers of those who had been gone for so long.
