I've moved twice since I last posted in here, and I will move again in two days.
Hilariously, right after I posted that joyous entry about not having a hangover, I got a hangover, which was bad enough that I had to admit that maybe the three other times this summer when I inexplicably got sick after drinking were also hangovers. Hangovers apparently only affect my digestive tract- I don't get headaches or body aches, my stomach is just like "I'm leaving now and slamming the door behind me" and that's that.
I don't think I've been drinking more on any given occasion this summer than last summer, really, but I have been less diligent about drinking water simultaneously. Obviously it makes a difference, and in the future I will stay better hydrated.
I eventually recovered enough to move all my stuff out of the apartment (my wonderful housemates helped- it's really been a lot of fun living with Anna M. and Lydia!) and head on home. In the first three days I went to the optometrist and got an extra pair of glasses, went to the doctor and got a routine checkup & blood test (I'm healthy!), sat on Karen's bed and watched Suits & Community while making thank-you cards, and went with Posfe to Philly for dancing. I had an interesting conversation about development theory in the car on the way home from the dance, which reminds me that I really need to get on reading all of the wiki materials 2Seeds provided for us re: agriculture and development theory. >_< That's my homework for the next two days or so.
The rest of the week was spent preparing for the yard sale. Yard sales are almost always disappointing in terms of turnout, if they're not multi-family, and I didn't get very many people. However, the ones I got were awesome- Sarabeth and Caleb came by, with Janelle in tow, and they bought a ton of my awesome stuff and gave it an appreciative home. More importantly, I got to see them all again- I was worried I wouldn't see any of my camp friends before I left. Allison came by right before it started to say goodbye, and Abby, Abby's mom, Laura, Sonya, and Sonya's friend Brandon all dropped in, as did some people from church. I made about $50 on the yardsale itself, which isn't too bad, since the most expensive item I had to sell was $3. I also received about $150 in total via donations this week! Most of those were from people who stopped by the yardsale to say goodbye, or who bought a few dollar's worth of stuff and then handed me a large bill to keep. People who knew about the yardsale from church, but couldn't make it that day, also came up to me or my mom and gave me their donations.
So while it was a bit stressful, cleaning my room and trying to price things, I think it was a good project for my last week at home. And during the slow times, it was also just nice to sit outside for a while and chill with a book! I started reading W.E.B DuBois's The Souls of Black Folk cover to cover- I'd read excerpts (mostly the essay-like portions) for seminar this past year, but we'd skipped a lot of the history and all of the stories in it, which is a shame. I wish I had gotten farther along in it.
After the yardsale, there wasn't much left to do but finish up my shopping (which I did on Sunday afternoon) and pack (which I did Sunday night/wee hours of the morning.) Luckily I was able to sleep in today, so I did manage to get around five and a half hours of sleep, which under ordinary circumstances is the minimum I need to get through the day without napping. I didn't want to go to sleep until it was done, because I had a lot of last-minute errands and tasks to do this morning/afternoon, and we had to get to my uncle's house before he went to work.
So now I'm here in Plainfield, NJ. I hugged my mom goodbye, and I just read Sarah Pontier's account of her first few days in Tanzania- it sounds awesome and intense, I'm looking forward to it!
