I think I just figured out what my oral question has been all along.
"Is sending Jesus (and also implicitly endorsing all that Jesus says and does) in character with what we've seen of the Old Testament God?"
...so basically, "Is Jesus the son of (the Old Testament) God?"
Can I even *ask* that in an academic way? It seems like to even get close to doing it justice I'd have to write a paper on it, and obviously the New Testament says "yes, Jesus is the son of the Old Testament God", but I want to treat it sort of in a literary kind of way and see if God's character is consistent throughout the Old and New Testament. I don't know. It all connects in weird ways, and the whole subject is intensely personal, but I can't think of any reading this year I'm more interested in exploring than the Bible.
Yeah, I'm not even sure I'm going about this the right way. Jesus keeps going on about how only the foolish and little children understand things and are going to get into the kingdom of heaven, so maybe my logical/literary approach is useless. But don't you believe something because you've been convinced? Small children are just easier to convince.
Aaaagh this is too big. I'm pretty sure this is sophomore-essay type stuff, and I can't figure out how to organize all my questions into one, or failing that, pick the best question. The oral is only half an hour long, after all.
I am completely lost. Should I just leave this alone and ask some other question I don't care about as much, or keep trying to hammer something out of the Bible? My oral topic was due yesterday, so I'm doing this on borrowed time. Advice from upperclassmen would be appreciated.
