Is Sawyer the New Spike?

Apologies to all non-Buffy, non-Angel LOST fans, but it seems to me that I am already seeing 'battlelines' drawn between those who like Sawyer and Skate, and those who like Jack and Jate.

See, Sawyer does sorta remind me of Spike in that he is introduced as a less than savory character, who is morally ambiguous and leaning towards being a crass, cocky jerk and yet we see that he does have a sensitive side, an emotional vulnerability that comes out because of his past circumstances etc. He is the guy who acts a jerk because it protects him or because he has a dash of self-loathing. Spike played the brash braggart but underneath was the sensitive poet who wore his love on his sleeve.

Perhaps this is why I find Sawyer so interesting, it is obvious that he has more layers than people give him credit for and he is not just a cookie cutter villain. Although I do find that Locke is fast becoming my fave character, Sawyer is the kind of character I find myself rooting for even when he acts like a bully-boy jerk. Kinda predictable of me but them's the breaks.

And I can see already the rumblings about the love triangle that reflect the same extreme polarization that came about in the buffy fandom over the Angel/Buffy/Spike love triangle.

Jack does have some wonderful flaws but generally he is respected and looked up to as a leader for the group, people rely on him and view him as potentially a great man, even though he does have some major flaw which we the viewers are allowed to see. There is a mary-sued quality to Jack that perhaps makes me resist totally getting on board with his character. Jack reminds me of Angel. He's the heroic lead who is supposed to get the heroic heroine AKA Kate because essentially he is THE good guy, who tries to do right even if he fails on occasion because of his insecurities or guilt or remorse yadda yadda (insert more descriptions of Angel here).

And yet we see Kate finding connections with Sawyer, who is an outsider, a maverick and part of her is attracted to that because she too has a less than savory past.

Anyway, I just find it amusing that on the boards we already have posters who are fanatically anti-Sawyer and anti-skate, and I could bet hard money that most of those would also be pro-Jack, and pro-Jate lovers. Am I wrong?

Am I seeing parallels where there are none? It just seems that already the writers are having to walk that thin line with Sawyer where he does something good and then they have to erase that in the next ep because hell Sawyer is not allowed to be too sympathetic or it encroaches on Jack's status as the lead good guy. Not that I want Sawyer to be good! Hell no! But it's my impression of how things are going.
