previous chapter:
https://zorell.livejournal.com/21255.html After her meeting with Peters Kate was concerned. She had known that the scientist wouldn’t take her refusal to use the device well, but she had been surprised by his whole demeanour during the meeting, which had been far from his usual manner. Peters obvious annoyance at her decision was unlike the usually committed but mild mannered man she had come to know and respect. A man whose ethics wouldn’t normally have him pushing so hard to use an unknown and untested device. Something was off and Kate was going to do her damnedest to figure out what.
As she logged on to her computer to access the personnel files Kate Stewart considered the man in question. Peters and his team had been one she acquired when becoming the Head of Science and hadn’t had any prior contact with them until taking on the position. Drs Peters, Michaels and Carter had worked together on and off for a number of years. They all had good reputations in their fields and as a team seemed to work well together, balancing each other out. Since taking up her position Kate hadn’t had any problems with any of the three scientists, or their work, and her assessment of them followed the lines of those who worked with them both now and previously, - the three were well respected, dedicated, and thorough. Looking through Peters file there was nothing that jumped out at her that would explain his recent over zealousness with regard to the project in question. He had family of course and considering the projects origins it would be understandable if it hit a little closer to home than for some, but anyone with any sense of humanity would find it virtually impossible to view this particular project without some emotion however impartial and dispassionate the scientists may be expected to be.
As much as Kate was a scientist she was also her father’s daughter. She was well aware of the military connotations of this particular project Peters was involved in and she had no allusion that although the directive for the project was to create an anti-dote, so as to be prepared for any future incursions or confrontations, there were certain to be those somewhere pushing for weaponization of any results they got. She had been and would continue to do her best to keep the project focused and on track. It was a task that seemed it may become increasingly difficult, not least due to the sudden appearance of the new research material a while ago. It had been, to say the least, a shock and one that raised more questions than answered at the time, and was still the cause of some frustration as evidenced by her meeting with Peters. Although Kate had managed to keep the research item secure and on a need to know basis she feared that knowledge of its existence and the questions it raised may soon reach the wrong people, if it hadn’t already. Could that be the cause for Peters recent agitation ? Was someone pressuring him in regards to a military agenda ? Had someone found out about the research item and wanted away in through the back door so to speak ?
Kate sighed as she sat back in her seat, with nothing obvious jumping out at her it looked like she needed to do some subtle digging if she was to find out was going on with Peters and the project.
