Happy Birthday,
lagreyeyes!
I am rocking my to-do list today, largely thanks to a 9AM hair appointment making sure I got up early. At this point, I'm just waiting for my sister's plane to land in three hours. I hope she gets all her work done on the plane so she doesn't have to do it here.
Since I'm looking at a week of family time, I took myself to Jane Eyre last night. It was as moody and gothic and moory as an adaptation should be. The scary parts were very scary, indeed, and although it's been a long time since I read it, I didn't feel like anything important was left out - some subplots, sure, but that's to be expected.
I sort of want to complain about it being too gloomy and melodramatic, but...that's what the book is, so that's more of a comment on the source (which I like, though I'll take Austen over Bronte any day). The biggest disappointment was not getting to see Bertha's flying leap; when the rest of the story is told in a visual medium, not getting to see that part is more of a bummer. I was hoping we'd get a nice flashback. Also, I felt like the romance wasn't built up quite enough; aside from a few moments, you didn't really feel the attraction until after it was admitted. But overall, a good adaptation, and worth it if it's playing near you.
See you next week, LJ!
