Reading list Day 8 - 10: The Odyssey

Jul 19, 2010 16:56

This one was tough. Maybe it was the searing heat wave that's slowed me down, maybe it's the fact that I haven't been reading as much as I did when I was younger. Or I'm just not used to the conventions of ancient epics.

I read Samuel Butler's prose translation on Wikisource, which was pretty readable. (I also read his translation of The Iliad in the same place.) I've glanced at other versions, which are formatted like poetry. Just like the original.

What to say? Well, there's a lot of cultural references that I get now ("between Scylla and Charybdis"). Like I said about some earlier entries, it's good to read the original and see how different the story is when it changes hands.

Now I'm going back the io9 list. Next up: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin.
