Reading list Day 7: I, Robot by Isaac Asimov

Jun 12, 2010 22:51

I polished it off in one day. Not that hard, really - the copy from my local library is 228 pages.

It was so much fun imagining the robots themselves - their voices, bodies, and faces. I imagined them becoming more and more streamlined with each new incarnation. I wish I could draw what I saw in my head. Would the later models have moving mouth parts and blinking eyes, even though the robot wouldn't really need those things? Asimov only left you with a vague impression of what each robot really looked like. I think it was a good idea. It prevents the novel from seeming dated.

I, Robot was first published in 1950 and the story starts in 1996. The future past. It was pretty funny imagining those first characters wearing '90s clothes walking around with a robot companion and taking tours in glass-sided submarines.

This book must be read all the way through. If you just flip through the last few pages, they won't mean anything to you. But when you read the whole book and get to the end...it means everything.

I won't spoil it for you.

Since my next choice on the io9 is in transit, I'll have to pick one from the Fadiman list: The Odyssey.
