"It's sooooooo hot," Lula whined, as if she had never lived through a summer. Ever. In her entire life.
"There are places where it's hotter, dear," her mother informed. "Like the Sahara."
"I don't even believe it," Lula protested, lying on the the chaise longue, leg draped over the side.
"Don't be so silly."
Sebastian, who was in his boat shoes and swimming trunks had quite a sensible suggestion.
"Why don't you come swimming? The water couldn't possibly be frigid and it will cool you down."
"It's so hot I couldn't even move!" Lula said in an utterly and unnecessarily dramatic manner.
"Well, you certainly seem to be moving your mouth," Sebastian said, rolling his eyes.
"Bastian," Maman scolded, "don't be so rude. Though, Lula, it would be a good idea to find something to do instead of moooannning."
"I am not moooannning. Not even with one 'o'," She said. "And I'll find something to do. Watch."
And with that, Lula was up and off.
First she drank a tall glass of fresh lemonade.
It was a bit too sour.
Then she drank a tall glass of sweet tea.
That, of course, was a bit too sweet.
"Why don't you drink some water?" Papa suggested, but this fell on deaf ears.
She tried to play catch the mouse with Bijou the fat cat, but even Bijou was too hot to want to play.
She tried to play solitaire on the floor under the bedroom ceiling fan. That was no fun. The fan was on high, and kept blowing away the cards.
She thought the fact that the house did not have air conditioning was positively "dinosauric".
"Pre-historic, dear."
Even reading failed. In this heat, it just gave her a headache.
Lula found found Maman (who was in her leggings) in the sun room rolling out her exercise mat.
"You're going to exercise?" Lula asked, flabbergasted.
"It's actually perfect for a bit of Bikram Yoga."
"Berkum what?"
"Yoga, dear. Yoga."
"Oh, I can do yoga, I bet. Don't you hum and get all calm? Can I do some Berkum Yoga with you?"
"I really think you might find it much too hot, dear--"
But Lula was already off to change out of her sundress.
"Okay," Lula said, "I am ready to do some Berkum Yoga."
"Well, now I've laid out a little mat for you, okay. You'll have to watch very closely to what I'm doing; it might be a little difficult."
"I think it will be fun!"
"Well, okay."
Lula did the first position and held it. She even did the second. But the third was just too much. She plopped herself right on the floor. It was so hot, she couldn't even believe it.
"Lula, dear, why don't you go get some water? I really think this is too difficult for you to do," Maman said, quite concerned.
"I have, ugh, an even better idea," Lula replied and took her exercise mat and herself into the house.
Not but a few minutes later did Papa see Lula walk by in her polka dot bathing suit and sunblock half smeared on her body.
"Now what are you off to do?" he asked.
"I'm going swimming, Papa," Lula said quite matter-of-factly.
As if it wasn't obvious.
