I never listened to The Gits when we shared the same city in the early 1990's, instead I came to them as many people did, via the sensational and sickening murder and violation of their lead singer. I was a 22-year old welfare mom with no support, and very little hipster cred in a city of scenesters. In all my years in Seattle I barely left Ballard, (then still an enclave of elderly Norsefolk), and I think I attended exactly three shows. (No sitters, no money, y'all!)
I followed the case with total fascination, and possibly too much empathy. I still remember a nightmare I had - I was her rapist and I sat next to Mia Zapata's cooling body and had myself a congratulatory smoke. Then I, Rapist carefully formed the ashes of my cigarette into a perfect little pyramid so that whoever found the body would know I cared so little for being caught that I lingered. One of the most vivid and terrifying dreams of my life.
But it was the beginning of a possibly life-long infatuation for me.
One of my most perfect pop music moments was in 2002. I was running the Soup Kitchen at Peaceful Valley Community Center, and the Teen Program kids were milling about. We were cleaning the joint to close for the day. The crusty punks who ran the teen program played a mix CD, and Second Skin came on. Everyone - 30-something me, the Crusty 20-somethings and the Teens all singing and air-banding with mops and brooms and kitchen sponges. I remember thinking how totally bad-ass that the Crusty folx had exposed the Teens to The Gits and that the Teens had drunk it up.
I once read that Second Skin is the perfect rock n' roll song, and I think it just might be.
So...I took my raised-pay ass to Amazon and ordered me a copy of The Gits Movie. DVD release was 7/8.
http://thegitsmovie.com/ So I think I showed considerable restraint in the intervening month!
