In the first episode, when he says "I have whispered her name a thousand times in my heart" I thought - and that is the first time I caught an inkling that he could have done it....
Something in him loved the tragic hero role a little too much.
His adopted children standing by him really sways me in the other direction. And the lawyer's comment "so he's a serial killer who every 17 years beats an unsuspecting woman to death on a staircase?"
It's about a murder investigation - a wife is found at the foot of a narrow staircase in her house dead, and there is blood. Lots of it.
Basically the suspect (the husband, natch) allowed the filmmakers follow him around through the investigation and trial.
Strange twists abound (like total wtf?!? twists) and there are great characters and situations that are enlightening regarding class and sex and the South.
It's incredibly well done and in the end I do not feel like I can form a good opinion as to his guilt or innocence.

It does seem so preposterous.
