When the time comes, beloved,
to fetch me at last from this assignment . . .
do not deliver me to the Endless Summerlands
or the City of Light
Or any of those painfully bright places
where the sheep graze
and the shepherds sleep
and no shadows fall. . .
Such misery is unrelenting light!
Guide me instead, my love,
to Endless Night
To stars infinite and sparkling
and shadow deeper than the seas
To snow ever fresh and new
To graceful frost and cloudy breath.
Release my jet wings that I may fly at last
and forever fall through sterling stars and silver moons
radiant novae and glowering dwarves
whispy nebulae and dancing galaxies. . .
And there, in the cool and shining dark
I will finally find my rest.
