Everyone's familiar, I'm sure, with the concept of gaydar. Well, I've also found that those of the dork persuasion such as myself often possess an innate ability to recognise those of their own kind at 20 paces. And I use the term dork with the most positive of connotations--I take it as a compliment whenever someone labels me as such (a sentiment which I'm imagining is shared, given the company I'm posting this to...).
Anyway, take the case of a guy who sits just behind me in my SadisticsStatistics class. The class has only met a handful of times, and I haven't spoken to him until today. Nor does he dress in any stereotypically "nerdy" manner (whatever that means). But there's just something about the way he carries himself that just screamed to me "Why yes, I own a 20-sided die" from the minute he walked into the classroom.
So today in class we're going over a problem that involves graphing a line that looked roughly like a lopsided tipi, and then the prof drew a circle around the two bottom points to show that they weren't statistically different from each other. In that moment, my own inner geek jumped up and down and went "Hey! That looks like Gandalf's hat!!" (yes, I know, I'm truly pathetic). So at the end of class, I decided to 1) test my supposition about the aforementioned classmate, and 2) hope that I was correct, because I didn't want to be the only one in the room who saw it. So I turned around and asked him if I would be a gigantic dork if I saw the aforementioned hat of Gandalf on the chalkboard.
To which he started reciting the inscription written around the edge of the One Ring. In the language of Mordor.
Can I spot 'em or what? :D \o/
