In order to keep myself from going insane, I'm sitting in on Sara's independent theatre movements class. Aside from being a wonderful friend, Sara is on my favorite people list and she is one of the best teachers I've ever had. As a result of my sitting in on her class, I'm doing homework which is not required of me. Thankfully, one of my roommates is enrolled in the class and a friend sent me the syllabus, so I don't have to buy anything.

I just finished reading Richard Hornby's "Somewhere Else First" from the summer 2009 edition of the Hudson Review. In his article, Hornby complains that nearly everything that is produced in regional theatre companies was produced in a major, commercial theatre first. He believes that regional theatre companies should spend their time focusing on the playwrights, rather than the money, and that they should be producing current, new plays.

In typical Alexa fashion, I have quotes for you. While I was constantly annoyed with Hornby's incessant complaining throughout his article, I did actually agree with most of his assessments and I was thoroughly enamored by his humor.

Yes, it is ironic that touch Rene rather than sensitive Misha turns out to be gay, and yes, the homosexuality explains Rene's gay bashing; but if you do not see these things in the distance coming at you like an express train roaring down the track, you are having a bad day.

Both theatres are comfortable, with good sightlines and acoustics; the lobby is spacious, supplemented by an agreeable courtyard, teh perfect place for a drink on a clear, balmy Westwood night. (Smog is not permitted in the chic west side of Los Angeles.)
