I recently went to some small villages in Rayalseema region of Andhra Pradesh. This region is known to be quite dry and arid. Everywhere I looked I saw paddy and sunflower fields. Both these crops require a lot of water to grow. The people of the region complain of lack of water. Farmers say their income depends on water. The same situation is along the cauvery river. This region is not dry and arid, but there is water scarcity. Is there real water scarcity. Why do these farmers cultivate paddy, when water is at a premium. They can grow other cereals, pulses which do not require a lot of water. The governments should think on what crops are suitable in what places.
