Last weekend I flew to St. Louis for Zoodada's grandmother's funeral. It was a meeting of most of the Zoo clan, all but Zoodada's sister (who's about ready to pop--her first child is due in a couple of weeks.)
Some traditional funereal practices are downright bizarre. Who the heck came up with the idea of putting the dead person on display for people to look at? I don't care if they "look like they're sleeping"--they're dead. I remember Grandmother S. as a incredibly energetic woman. Why should I want to remember still and cold in a coffin?
Tossing a trowelful of dirt over the coffin was very unsatisfying. I'd want to do the Harry Potter thing and bury her all the way--sweat for her. Ah well.
I hope no one puts me on display when I die. Maybe I will go for cremation instead.
