Dance, dance, wherever you may be

Congratulations, President Barack Obama!

I feel privileged to have witnessed the inauguration of America's 44th President.

As a life-long Labour supporter who in 1997 celebrated the election of the first Labour prime minister of my lifetime, I have no illusions about the power of politics to disappoint. I'm sure there will be many times over the next four years that I'll disagree with Obama. He might do things I'm profoundly opposed to. But none of that diminishes the significance of this moment.

This is change. This is democracy in action. To see America elect an African-American at a time when many people still living can remeber being denied their civil rights makes me believe in progress and hope.

I hope Obama brings the social reform he seems to promise. But whether he does or not, I am glad to be able to share in this moment in some small way.

rl, joy
