Refraction Activities Questions:

Refraction of light from air into glass:

Discussion Questions:
1)      When light hits glass at an angle of incidence of 0º, it reflects exactly back on itself, at Ө = 0º.
2)      When light travels from air to glass at an angle of incidence > 0º, the light refracts to draw the angle closer towards the normal. This could be referred to as FST, or Fast --> slow towards.
3)      In relation to the normal, the incident and refracted rays are located on opposite sides., at Өi = 10º ӨR = 7.5º, Өi = 20º ӨR = 13.5º, Өi = 30º ӨR = 20.0º, Өi = 40º ӨR = 26.0º, Өi = 50º ӨR = 31.5º, Өi = 60º ӨR = 36.0º
4)      In each case, the angle of refraction represents about two thirds of the angle of incidence.
5)      For all angles of incidence > 0º, SinӨi ÷ SinӨR = 1.47.
6)      If light travels from glass into air, it will bend farther from the normal.

Refraction of light from glass into air:

1)      When Өi = 0º, the light is refracted exactly back on itself, at the angle of 0º.
2)      When light travels from glass into air at Өi ≠ 0º, the light is bent away from the normal. This could be referred to as FSA, or fast --> slow away.
3)      For the refraction of light from glass into air, ӨR >Өi.
4)      Both Өi and ӨR are located on opposite sides of the normal, at Өi = 10º ӨR = 15º, Өi = 20º ӨR = 30.5º, Өi = 30º ӨR = 48.0º, Өi = 40º ӨR = 73.0º. Past 45º, total internal reflection occurs, where there are no refracted rays.
5)      The SinӨi ÷ SinӨR ratio for angles if incidence up to 45º is about 0.67.
6)
7)      There is no initial refraction at the curved surface in all cases because the light is traveling in towards the centre of the flat side of the mirror, on a radius. Drawing a perpendicular line from the tangent of the point on the circumference where the radius touches shows us the normal, which the beam of light is running directly along. Refraction means the live is moving away or towards the normal
8)      As the angle of incidence increases, there is an extra refracted angle visible at 180º - Өi º.
9)      The index of refraction is at 90º when Өi = 45º. The scientific name for that angle is “the critical angle”.
10) When Өi > Өc, total internal reflection occurs.
all of you.
