So, I actually really enjoyed this episode, despite it being mainly about Ray, in the same way that last episode was devoted to Shaz.
And on that note, I actually want to start by talking about the end. Because, you know, that's logical.
So, after Ray solved the crime and everything, the background went black and LOM played again, like with Shaz in last episode. I'm still not 100% sure what that's all about, but I'm leaning more towards the idea now that it represents the fact that they have come back to Gene, so to speak. Both episodes featured them considering leaving Gene in a way so I think it represents that. It was interesting how the song kind of continued to play from where it stopped with Shaz as well. And I didn't catch what Nelson said in the background this time, but that probably follows on as well.
Also, Shaz also saw that starscape thing that alex witnessed last episode. I think that maybe that means a similar thing and that somehow those are linked.
I'm also leaning more towards the idea that Keats is some sort of demon or devil. I just think that there are a lot of clues that could represent hell, at first I thought it was a bit obvious but it does make a lot of sense. In fact, I was talking about this today with my friend, and she thinks that 1983 is a limbo, and Gene is God and CID are all people that have died and have to prove that they are loyal and can go to Heaven, and Keats is trying to tempt them to betray Gene. I sort of like that idea, but I think Gene being God is a bit extreme. It also fits in with the Life on Mars music, because it could represent them proving that they can go through the Limbo to Heaven, and Nelson does say "Welcome" in the background of the first one. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something similar with Ray.
There's also a camera shot, with Keats stood by a police car looking kinda evil with eerie music playing and dust blowing over him, which makes him look evil and supernatural, at the same time as Gene says "soon enough we'll all be feeling the heat."
Anyway, Jim is a very persuasive man, he totally knows how to convince Ray to betray Gene and join him, and he was also good at getting Shaz to confide in him last episode.
This storyline was very dramatic, and I really felt for Ray, and I found it fascinating learning more of his backstory, it made me like him much more, as he started off as one of my least favourite characters. I also sympathised with the villain and victim, which doesn't normally happen so strongly. I was crying a lot in this episode.
Shaz and Alex talking about class at the end made me giggle, it wasn't obvious who Alex was talking about at all.
Still no mentions of Molly, but she didn't deny having her this time. Maybe that does mean that the Supertheory is true.
