Here is the reaction post for Ashes to Ashes episode 5
There's something about the Sam Tyler jacket sequence that seems a bit off to me. I know it's a dream sequence, and they're always quite bizarre, but this one just seemed odd. I think it's because Gene's voiceover doesn't really sound like how Gene would talk about Sam (which I think it was about, really, Alex's mind sort of associated the jacket with Sam, and the comments are about him and not the jacket; because there wouldn't be a 30 second clip about an item of clothing, that would be silly) in that way. Which, of course makes sense as it is Alex's dream, but it doesn't sound like how Alex would talk about Sam either. I sounds to me like how Gene would talk about himself, although what that all means I don't know. That Sam became more like Gene, maybe? It seems a bit of a stretch to me.
After that, we get a nice little clip of Ray and Chris dancing, very cute, Chris looks hilarious there.
And then of course, Litton makes his first appearance, acting just as slimy as he did in LOM.
I loved Shaz in the tea-making scene. Just those scenes when she's quietly awesome and outsmarting the men without them even realising (except Bevan), whilst they're being their usual sexist selves is just so epic.
So, now we know that Ray saw the stars too. Which means that the stars and the LOM music are probably linked, as both Ray and Shaz experienced both, and as Alex saw the stars too, she's probably in the same boat as them. What that specifically means though, I don't know, apart from the ongoing idea that everyone in this world is in a coma, and that Alex and Sam are different because they can remember their old world. But that's nothing I wasn't thinking about already. When Ray's talking about it to Chris, he mentions being at the edge of the world, which could show that they are in some sort of limbo, I guess, but I'm pretty much totally baffled.
Now jumping back a few scenes (I totally just write these things as I think of them, apoligies if they're ever in a funky order) to Gene breaking into Alex's drawer and burning the evidence of Sam. If there hadn't been a billion clues before now, at this point we definitely know something's up. We always knew that Gene was somehow involved with Sam's death, but I think up until now, there hasn't been masses of clues. Gene could just have been secretive about the topic because he is still upset. Apart from Keats, who it is hinted at from the start is not all he seems, we only really had the statement to go by. But now we definitely know that whatever it is Gene did, he is trying to cover it. I don't believe that this is because he actually killed him, that's far too obvious IMO, and would pretty much go against everything Gene is. So what he actually did, I don't know.
And then we see Keats walking out of the station and just sort of standing there for a few minutes, staring at Alex. Looking evil again, basically. It looked to me like he knew what they had just been talking about, and he obviously has a significant theory, but it wasn't portrayed like he was the good guy. He looked horror movie creepy in that short scene.
The acts at that police gala were pretty shocking. Chris' dance scene was a bit of a lighthearted break from all of the significant messages and confusing scenes in the episode. He also looked pretty hilarious. And then there was Ray singing 'Danny Boy'. There's another post about how that song is significant and sounds like it's could be referring to the dead copper. Which I would link to, if I hadn't forgotton where I saw it. But even without the messages, that's a very heartwarming scene.
Then there's the whole Bevan storyline, but I feel as if anything I add to that would be stating the obvious. There were, of course, all of the trust issues, with Alex and Gene and Litton and Bevan to an extent, which is obviously a running theme throughout the whole show.
