Scholarship

Jun 12, 2008 21:23

I spent the evening reading Shakespeare criticism. A couple of quotes struck me.

"No one who cannot rejoice in the discovery of his own mistakes deserves to be called a scholar."
- Donald W. Foster

"Our institutionalized solidarity in bashing the 'bourgeois subject' has to some extent calcified us into an elite corps of yuppie guerrilla academics."
- Linda Charnes

It's odd that the manner of Kit Marlowe's death is a source of comfort to me at this moment. (If you're curious: He was maybe stabbed in the eye with a poniard, or maybe it was all faked… although I highly doubt it.) It was, at least, a very visceral way to die.
