Rei is lying in her bed at night. Over the past day, she has heard one person after another expressing his or her grief, or trying to console one another.

Grief. What I felt when Winner seemed to have died. They are all experiencing that pain to some extent, though they express it differently.

Whenever someone dies, people hurt. And other people hurt, because those people hurt. Yamato and Amada were especially well-liked, but I can't think of anyone on base whose death would affect nobody.

Her eyes are nearly closed.

I wonder who would grieve if I were to...to...

It hits her suddenly. Her eyes snap open into an expression of shock. Her mind seems to have accelerated to whirlwind speeds while not going anywhere at all, except for its new realization. She speaks out loud.

"I don't want to die."

If she needed any indicator to demonstrate that she had changed, that she is no longer the person she was when she was transferred to the EDF, this is it. It's undeniable. She now fears that which she would have once accepted willingly.

"I don't want to die."

The word "Instrumentality" flickers across her consciousness. What will the Commander think?

Sleep will not come easily to Rei Ayanami tonight.
