004 of 100: the united states of pop

In this latest installment of Angie B's 100 Things, POP CULTURE YOU SHOULD KNOW:

He's called DJ Earworm, and you might know him from his yearly pop mash-ups. Quite the sensation on Youtube, every year he takes the biggest 25 chart-toppers, mashes them all together, and makes brilliant videos that turn some of the most annoying songs into pleasantly catchy earworms. It's also an interesting way to chart the trends in pop music each year. For instance, the 2009 mix shows just how many songs relied on "down" in their catchier rhymes, lol.

Yes, pop music can be total crap. Most of the chart-toppers every year are atrocious. They're the sort of songs that you know against your own will, that make you want to punch small infants on a bad day. But all of that aside, I really fucking love good mash-ups and remixes. Even the shittiest songs can be made interesting in the hands of a really good DJ. And DJ Earworm is one of the best. Check him out on Youtube, and I dare you not to find yourself bopping along to ridiculous shit like the Black-Eyed Peas.
