Meg gave me L.

Leela (Classic!Who): Leela could have easily been nothing more than T/A fanservice for the fanboys -- she's a gorgeous lady who rarely wears more than a leather bikini and carries around sharp knives and swords. But fuck the haters: I adore Leela. She started as the "noble savage" archetype, and while she never really stopped thinking the solution to every problem was a quick stab with a knife, I love her character arc. She and Four had a great friendship with tinges of a father-daughter relationship, and I was sincerely verklempt when she fell in love and decided to leave the TARDIS. I'll always be for badass companions who know how to fight and refuse to take shit from anyone. Ahhh, Leela!

Larry Underwood (The Stand): Larry is such a complex character. He had plenty of darkness in him, and was a fucking selfish brat for the first half of his arc. Uncle Stevie made it pretty clear that Larry was perpetually poised on a see-saw, able to tip into either good or bad at a moment's notice. But Larry was also stupidly naive and young, and fame had gone to his head. I wish he could have properly reciprocated poor Lucy Swan's feelings, and there is definitely an element of tragedy to his could-have-been romance with Nadine Cross, but ultimately I was glad to see him grow up and become a man standing up for good -- even if he did die days later in a nuclear explosion. Ah well, them's the knocks. (Note: I also can't help but picture Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Larry every time I do a re-read now.)

Linus Larabee (Sabrina): Sabrina is awfully fucking high on my list of ultimate comfort films. I've seen it more times than ANY OTHER classic film, and it will always have a very dear spot in my heart. A large reason for this is Audrey Hepburn in the title role, but almost equally as important is Humphrey Bogart as the older, cynical, married-to-his-work Linus, who falls in love with the younger, spirited, adorable Sabrina pretty much against his will. I just adore Bogey, and this love story is so charming to me. NGL, I've often wished I was Sabrina. "Linus Larabee is taking me to Paris!" Talk about wish fulfillment.

Lestrade (Sherlock/Sherlock Holmes): When I read the original canon, I didn't care for Lestrade at all. Mostly because the way Conan Doyle described him (essentially he's a human rat) totally turned me off and made me picture him as a seedy villain. This isn't quite fair to the character who, while frequently useless and bumbling in the original stories/early adaptations, is still essentially trying to catch the bad guy and solve the case. I started appreciating Lestrade more with Eddie Marsan's portrayal in Sherlock Holmes, partially because I like Eddie Marsan and partially because that performance brought out more of the comical elements of the character. And then they HAD to cast Rupert "Has Five Children And Is Good At Football" Graves in Sherlock, and I was pretty much a goner. For the record: I will always associate Lestrade with the bumbling, less-capable figure from the books, but I can certainly appreciate the eyecandy that is Graves as Lestrade.

"Little" John/John Little (Robin Hood): I consider myself an amateur expert when it comes to the Robin Hood mythos. At last count, I've read over fifty takes on the tale, including what's considered the "truest" rendition by Howard Pyle, and I believe I've seen every major TV and movie adaptation excepting the recent Russell Crowe outing (which I will see SOMEDAY because A) it's Robin Hood, B) CATE BLANCHETT, and C) Kevin Durand's bod). Suffice it to say, I fucking love the Robin Hood legend. And while I do prefer Much and Alan a Dale and Will Scarlett in terms of the Merry Men, you can't love Robin Hood and not also have a soft spot for Little John. He's basically the best known figure besides Robin himself and Maid Marian (who, fun fact, actually didn't show up until a least A HUNDRED YEARS after the original tale started to circulate). I've seen him portrayed as a fearsome warrior, a gentle giant, a man who literally goes mad with rage and kills indiscriminately, a simpleton, a wise-cracking sidekick, and a literal bear. And I think my favourite representation is STILL the latter: Disney's Robin Hood is forever in my Top Ten Disney Films of All Time, and I just adore Phil Harris' warm, funny voice coming out of that lumpy bear.

That was surprisingly hard to do. Took me a while to think up five people with "L" names. Most of my faves have "S" and "R" names, funnily enough. Huh.

...And no, I'm totally not displacing and updating my journal and wasting my time on memes when I need to be writing serious articles, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
