Sony's play station 3 console decisions have made me so angry that i have had to have a lie down, less my anger escapes and i end up in a strange place covered with the blood of my enemies.
When the play station 3 was first released, (initial launch in Japan and America) the play station included a play station 2 core. This means that it was fully compatible with all PS2 and PS1 games.
Before the console was launched in the rest of the world, Sony removed this hardware compatibility and replaced it with a software equivalent. The compatibility list for this new system was released on launch day. On launch 1,782 of the 2,451 PS2 games (72%) released had noticeable issues, minor issues or no known issues, with the remainder being incompatible with the console.
In response with this David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: “PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system. Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning game play and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.”
The compatibility list defines the playability in this manner:
3 squares = No known issues to date
2 squares = Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 with some minor issues
1 square = Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 with noticeable issues
The fans who have been trying to play these games define it in this manner:
3 squares = Game can run slow, with graphical glitches.
2 squares = you will not be able to play this game for more than an hour.
1 square = OH GOD MY EYES ARE BLEEDING.
Of those games which are unable to be played (it is reported) are:
* Okami
* God of War 1 & 2
* Ico
* Shadow of the Colossus
* Katamari Damacy
* We Love Katamari
* ALL of Final Fantasy
* ALL of GTA
* ALL of Devil May Cry
* Dragon Quest VIII
* ALL of Ratchet and Clank
Most of these were reasons to get a Play station 2 in the first place!
As a result of this decision, and how evidence supports that Sony have not been working on improving compatibility, have resulted in my decision not to get a Playstation 3. Instead, i will be looking for a cheep Playstation 2 which i can get chipped.
