1. Number and genre of books I own: Probably in excess of 400. All genres represented, although fiction is more heavily shown in the log than non-fiction.
2. Last book I bought: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
3. Books I am reading now: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer (for probably the sixth time) and Backlash by Jesse L. Cairns (okay, I'm not reading just editing it, but I had to put myself over somehow).
4. Three books I would recommend and why:
a). The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
by William L. Shirer. Those who do not learn from the past are
doomed to repeat it, and this book is the definitive work on Nazi
Germany. Don't let the nearly 1600 pages make you sink into a
defensive crouch; oil yourself up and dive right in. You'll thank
me for the rest of your life.
b). Although
bites_the_sun
is correct when she says that Laurell K. Hamilton has recently fallen
into a rinse, lather, repeat cycle, I still wholeheartedly recommend
her first vampire hunter novel Guilty Pleasures.
If you're a woman, you'll want to be like Anita Blake. If you're
a guy, you'll want to sleep with her. Some of the best dialogue
I've ever read coupled with wonderfully drawn characters make this a
great way to get started, and the next seven or so books are pretty
damned good, too.
c). Sacrifice by Andrew
Vaschss. Did you think Elmore Leonard and Ed McBain were
hard-boiled crime writers? Babe, you ain't see nothing yet.
In addition to his crackling dialogue and unflinching fearlessness in
describing some of the most horrible situations you can ever come
across, Vaschss is the most economical writer I have ever read.
The average Vaschss sentence is about six words along, and he can raise
gooseflesh with them as effectively as any horror author I've
perused. The man is the game... because he is that damn good.
