Oops.

Spilled a little coffee on the keyboard this morning ... I wasn't too worried, since I'd heard it was nearly impossible to damage a Model M with a liquid spill ... it'd basically have to somehow get up inside the little "tube" the keys are sitting on to short out anything. And for awhile, everything seemed ok. Cleaned up the spill on the surface, everything worked fine ... but about an hour later, the G and T keys started firing together. And after that, H and Y. Huh? The coffee spill was all the way over on the left ... why would keys in the middle of the keyboard be affected? Strangely, the backspace key was affected as well, losing the ability to auto-repeat. Tried resetting the keyboard by unplugging/replugging it, but now Windows doesn't recognize it at all. Oops.

So I dug out my 7/32" socket driver and took it apart. Oh god, what a mess. Still more hair and dirt I had missed the first time around. I really should have taken pictures, it was awful. Cleaned up what I could. It doesn't look like the coffee got into the control board or any of the connections, so I'm not sure why it stopped working.  But anyway ... I'll let it sit and dry for a day or so, then try it again. If that didn't do the trick, I'll have to try something a little more ... drastic ...

Incidentally, I'm back on my old (i.e., new) Belkin keyboard. It's squishy. Which, I hate to say it, is ... actually kind of nice. I don't think I ever did get used to the Model M. I'm so used to pounding the keys on softer keyboards, but on a Model M it's just ... WHAM WHAM WHAM. No cushioning at all. Need to reteach myself how to type. Assuming I can get it working again.
