Fic Meme Day 7

Jan 30, 2015 23:59

I started this meme SIX AND A HALF MONTHS AGO, sob.

Every day (consecutively or not), post about one of your fanworks:
1. Something old
2. Something new
3. Something you made for someone else
4. Something you made just for yourself
5. Something for a large fandom/pairing/character
6. Something for a small fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you're just really proud of

It was not difficult for me to choose a fic for this last post. Writing-and completing- Pō Pouli ‘A‘aki (A Night So Dark It Bites With the Teeth) is one of my prouder life achievements.

Pō Pouli was meant to be a birthday present for a dear friend. I started working on it six months ahead of time. I finished it six months late. ...Guys, do not ask me to write to a deadline, it doesn't fucking work.

Nonetheless, it is the best and biggest and most successful thing I've ever made, and I'm so fucking proud of it, and I'm so grateful to my friend for, completely unbeknownst to her, being the goad that kept me going, because frankly, the fact that I finished a 37k epic in only a year (or, at all) is nothing short of a miracle. I've never pulled it off before, and may never pull it off again.

And it's really good. I wanted to write something the Hawaii Five-0 fandom was lacking, maybe even something that only I could write, so I started by making a list of all the things I wanted to see in a fic about Hawai‘i that someone not from here would never include. Then I tried to cobble together a story that would include as many of those elements as possible. Somehow, Pō Pouli was what came out.

This story really feels like a child to me. I spent so much time on it, and put so much work into it. And so much of it is deeply, deeply personal. It's a glimpse into the Hawai‘i I love, the stories I grew up hearing, everything that is strange and hilarious and beautiful about these islands and the people that live on them. There are scenes plucked from my own memories and feelings. I bled and wept into this story, more than anything else I've written.

And people... loved it. This is the only thing I've ever written that is objectively popular. The response in comments and kudos and bookmarks was generous and enthusiastic. I still get comments every month or so, and I just want to die with happiness, because from what people say to me, everything I wanted to achieve came through the way I wanted, and it's absolutely the greatest joy a writer can have.

So, yeah, Pō Pouli's pretty much the benchmark. I can only hope to achieve something like it again, someday.
